Chinese Ship Enters Japanese Waters

TOKYO (AP) -- A Chinese ship doing ocean research entered Japanese waters and failed to respond to demands to leave, the Japanese coast guard said Tuesday.

A patrol boat from Japan's Maritime Safety Agency spotted the 1,000-ton Chinese ship Monday about 170 miles west of Amami-Oshima Island. The island is 800 miles southwest of Tokyo.

The patrol boat followed the Chinese vessel and called it by radio to demand that it leave Japanese waters. The Chinese ship didn't answer and remained in the area Tuesday, an official from the maritime agency said. He spoke on condition of anonymity.

The incident marks the 21st time this year that a Chinese research ship has been spotted in Japan's exclusive 200-nautical-mile economic zone, the official said. He said the sightings have been increasing.
