BROCADE Delivers Fibre Channel Fabric Switches to IBM For Storage Area Networking Solutions

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. (BROCADE(R)) (Nasdaq: BRCD), a leading supplier of Fibre Channel fabric switches for Storage Area Networking, announced today that IBM has selected the BROCADE SilkWorm family of Fibre Channel switches as its 8-port and 16-port Fibre Channel connectivity solution for IBM SAN solutions worldwide.

The two companies have entered an OEM agreement in which BROCADE will provide IBM with 8-port and 16-port Fibre Channel fabric switches for IBM solutions across IBM divisions. BROCADE Fibre Channel fabric switches connect servers with storage devices through a Fibre Channel Storage Area Network (SAN) and allow companies to access and share storage in a high-performance, manageable, and scalable environment.

Under this relationship, IBM and BROCADE will work together to allow IBM to deliver next-generation SAN solutions using BROCADE's award-winning 8-port and 16-port Fibre Channel fabric switches. The BROCADE 8-port and 16-port Fibre Channel switches are planned to be introduced later this year by IBM for use with the IBM Netfinity Servers and IBM storage in IBM Enterprise Storage Area Network solutions. In addition, BROCADE and IBM plan to work together on joint technology initiatives, including the close integration of certain BROCADE products with Tivoli System solutions: Tivoli Enterprise and Tivoli Storage Management.

"IBM is pleased to join with BROCADE to allow IBM to deliver next- generation SAN solutions based on BROCADE's scalable Fibre Channel fabric technology," said Duane Dueker, Storage Management Business Line Executive, Storage Systems Division. "Our customers require interoperable, standards- based SAN solutions that scale to enterprise level and support heterogeneous environments. Our selection of BROCADE's Fibre Channel fabric platform technology enables us to deliver on these requirements."

"We are delighted to form this relationship with IBM and to offer the BROCADE family of award-winning SilkWorm products as the Fibre Channel fabric switch for use in or with IBM solutions," said Greg Reyes, BROCADE president and CEO. "We are particularly proud that after evaluation by the IBM team, the BROCADE selection was based on the merits of our products, including proven scalability and broad management capabilities."

This news release contains forward-looking statements based on current expectations that involve risks and uncertainties. BROCADE's actual results may differ materially from the results discussed in the forward-looking statements. Factors that might cause such a difference include risks surrounding the development of the emerging market for storage area networks and for SAN switching products, the timely development, production and acceptance of new products and services, and BROCADE's ability to compete in a highly competitive and rapidly changing marketplace. These and other risks are detailed in BROCADE's prospectus dated May 24, 1999, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. BROCADE assumes no obligation to update the forward-looking information contained in this press release.
