Linden, my impresion is that the PB fund is too big to maneuver effectively. I'm not too sure if it's because Tice is a poor manager, or just that the best shorts are (IMO) small caps that wouldn't make a difference to a fund his size. I thought about it for my IRA, but passed.

Funny you should ask. I just closed my position in BEARX today. I bought it for the same reason, IRA money. I lost about half my investment and got tired of never seeing it go up. (check out the chart, except for October 98, it goes straight down). Glad I only put in a small portion of my portfolio. I think Tice is expecting the big Kahuna and unless that happens, he is not well-positioned. You might want to find a broker who will let you buy puts for your IRA.

Hello Linden deCarmo: shorting in IRA accounts
To my knowledge you cannot short stocks in any IRA. You can box though. You can buy options. The understanding I have is that an IRA cannot be pledged in any way. Naked shorting would be pledging the IRA. Buying securities is not pledging, neither is boxing. An IRA could only be unboxed though on the short leg. I see no advantage to boxing unless you are trying to trade the volatility of an upward price trend.
Best regards,
m
