China Telecom 2000 - Successful Conference on the Fast Changing China Telecom Marketplace
BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 22, 1999--A lot of changes have taken place in the telecom market in China in the past year and more dramatic changes are in the Chinese government plans for the near future. These changes were hot topics at the recent 1999 China Telecom 2000, which was organized by the Information Gatekeepers Group. The conference was held in Washington DC from June 2-3, 1999 and drew over 130 high-level telecom executives from several countries.
The major changes in the telecom market in China since last year include: the formation of a new cabinet favoring reform, the new ministry (Ministry of Information Industry) overseeing the sector, separation of telecom regulator from operation, separation of post from telecom, increasing WTO pressure, first official joint venture in telecom services with AT&T, reiteration of existing ban on foreign participation in telecom services, review of "China-China-foreign" financing structure, renewed support for China Unicom and the opening of the field to new players. In addition, many other major reorganizations are in the process: the breakup of China Telecom into four operating companies, the transfer of CDMA Great Wall Networks and Guoxin Paging Company to China Unicom, the granting of a CDMA license to China Unicom, the trial of IP telephony services by China Telecom, China Unicom and Ji Tong in over 20 major Chinese cities and the formation of a new telecom service provider formed by the Ministry of Railways, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television and Shanghai Municipal Government.

The conference covered all these changes, their impact on foreign companies, and a wide array of topics related to the telecom market in China - new telecom policy and regulations, telecom services market and the WTO, telecom investment financing models, IP phone and fax regulations, the Internet, fiber optics and optical networking, switching, wireless, mobile satellite, VSAT, and other technologies. A total of 27 speakers made presentations on various aspects of the telecom market in China.
