>Well, I am not sure what to say when you call Natalie Portman "plain looking"...<

She is not exactly stunning to me, though she is attractive. She is not plain looking. Merely a bit plain.

>But the presence of Liam Neeson at the center of the film gave it a certain gravity, enhanced by many of the other actors.<

Perhaps. Though even here I thought there was something lacking.

>Jar Jar is like Bilbo Baggins, a comic everyman who is ultimately heroic; the Gungans are actually the best worked out alien race that has appeared in the films; and their face- off with the droids has a certain nobility and poignancy.<

I say nuke them all.

>Yoda looked pretty much like Yoda,<

In Episode I he looked anaemic, plastic even. The first Yoda seemed better defined, more organic in my opinion.

>…the only problem with Samuel Jackson's role was that it was a throwaway, and hence a waste of talent…<

Very good. This is it, Neocon. Jackson is an imposing figure. To have him do nothing was really wasteful.

>…and aliens are supposed to look strange.<

Agreed. I just think fat white bananas are a bit too strange for a Jedi master.

>Since Darth Vader is supposed to become a Jedi first, and must come from somewhere, I am not sure what your objection is...he is not supposed to start evil, but his origins are dubious, and he is set up to stumble into bitterness.<

“I'm gonna get ‘em” and “Whooooa! This is POD racin'” and “lets git outta here” are hardly lines for a kid who would grow up to threaten universal civilisation.

>Also, the mother was excellent.<

Vader's mom? I don't think so. I simply laughed at the scene where young Ani parts with his mom. “You must go now. Always remember me. Cya!/ Okay mother, cya. Oh but I can't. Its too hard to say goodbye. But oh well cya.”

There was no honesty here in my opinion.

>Anyway, we found it "deeper" than the others, with a greater sense of character- resonance and drama...<

Well good. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
