Motorola Chooses Atmel Technology for its M-Smart Jupiter Smart Card Platform SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 23, 1999--Atmel Corporation (Nasdaq:ATML), Atmel and Motorola's Worldwide Smartcard Solutions Division (WSSD) today announced that Motorola has chosen Atmel's high end nonvolatile memory and fully integrated process technologies for its M-Smart Jupiter(TM) smart card platform. The smart card chip, based on the ARM 32-bit microprocessor, utilizes Atmel's advanced nonvolatile technology and incorporates many Motorola security features designed to protect the data on the card from unauthorized access. The M-Smart Jupiter(TM) Platform supports secure and dynamic application download, robust security, advanced speed and processing power, and maximum flexibility in building value-added smart card solutions. The operating system and related software developed by Motorola conforms to the latest smart card standards, including Sun Microsystem's Java Card 2.1 and Visa's Open Platform 2.0. These standard environments enable the development of globally interoperable smart card systems. In addition, the specifications allow smart card issuers to choose from a variety of operating system options and application developers while providing a core security and card management technology. "This chip permits a quantum leap in capability and speed as compared to existing products on the market," according to Francois Dutray, vice-president and general manager of Motorola's Worldwide Smartcard Solutions Division. "Because of it, the software developed by our engineering team is able to offer the highest levels of security while maintaining application flexibility. Our operating system sets the standard for the level of performance that will be required in the next century." "We are proud to have been chosen by Motorola for this key effort," said Tony Giraudo vice-president and general manager of Secure Products at Atmel Corporation. "Secure integrated circuits for the entire range of contact and contactless smart cards are a strategic focus for Atmel, as can be seen by our steady pace of engineering innovations and our recent acquisitions. This partnership is evidence of the value of these investments."
