<CNBC reported earlier today that CMGI is rumored to have an interest in some of CPQ's assets including Alta Vista, the ISP.>

First off, I don't think Alta Vista is a Service Provider (ISP); it is a search engine. LCOS is a portal, which may include one or more search engines. This is not necessarily a competitive conflict. Alta Vista is one of the biggest and best search engines in the business. I think CMGI would be making a shrewd investment.

Even if one goes with your concept <Why buy Alta Vista and build up the product when Alta Vista is in direct competition with LCOS?>, isn't this much like AOL buying out its competitor, Compuserve? If there are synergies there, go with it.

Personally, I don't think LCOS and Alta Vista are direct competitors.
