Hey, Rene --

First off -- sorry about the troubles you're facing with the IPO that I've been reading. I hope you clear that up in some fashion.

RE: portals vs. search engines. I couldn't disagree more. Search engines provide a specialized function -- a very valuable function, but limited nonetheless. A portal provides a superset of search engine functionality (i.e a search engine plus much more). If you think about it, why wouldn't I go to a web page where I can see real-time stock indexes, headlines, personalized news, sports score, e-mail.... AND a kick-butt search engine?

Haven't AOL, Yahoo! and Lycos validated this concept? What dynamic will take place that will spur people to want to shed those free extras? Would you want to go to AltaVista and search on stock prices, then search on news, then search on your specialized topic? That doesn't make sense to me at all.

AV may be a better search engine -- that's something we can all debate with valid opinions until the cows come home (sorry, I'll save that for the Gateway thread!), but is it THAT much better? That is, AltaVista's search engine power/functionality is so compelling that I'd make it my home page instead of Lycos? (or Yahoo! for that matter -- I'm not being CMGI-centric on this point.) I find that a dubious proposition...

Rene, I agree with your opinion about portals, but are you the market? More people will be newbies than experiences searchers for many years. Most people just want easy, look at Long Distance service, simple sells even if it is more costly.
Whneever I like a product, I take a good long look, since i don't see myself as most companies ideal customer. (COMS is an exception, I liked my Palm VII so much I bought the stock!)

Anyway JMHO
