Mike I'm a old vi' guy too but a good IDE makes programmers much more productive. If you don't use the GUI palletes at least you've got...

1. Colour coded code; this is a big bonus.
2. Auto indent, brace, bracket etc.
3. Visual class browser.
4. Integrated debugger.
5. Integrated help ; for Java no need to have multiple
browser windows open for docs.

'vi' is okay for whipping up some 'C'/shell scripts but once you get used to an IDE you'll see the difference. Also for Java I find Wintel builds under Symantec many orders of magnitutde faster than command line JDK builds on my Ultrasparc.
