Iridium To Chase Phone Booths Market [Phillips Business Information] Top>Business and Finance>Stocks>Services>Communications Services>IRID (Iridium World Comm. Ltd.) More good news by: shaggy_64 (M/USA) 17042 of 17091 06/21/99 -- Iridium LLC [IRID] is honing in on one of the proposed key markets of rival Globalstar L.P. [GSTRF] by selling portable solar-powered satellite phone booths. The booths are being developed by Motorola Inc. [MOT]. Iridium India Telecom Ltd. has received permission to make and distribute the solar phone booths in India. Pricing was not disclosed. Iridium told us that similar services are being developed for the Brazilian market. Motorola designed the satellite phone booth to make available telecommunications service to remote villages which have little or no communications infrastructure. That is seen as a key market by Globalstar, which is developing its own satellite phone booth. Iridium said it is not heavily pursuing the so-called "village-phone" market. However, Iridium's favored international traveler segment has not generated anywhere near the number of subscribers the company had hoped for, forcing Iridium to look elsewhere to find much-needed customers.
