Paul-san I believe this (autction) is about 'asset recovery & disposition', as you know a lot of Dell's machines are leased to businesses and some to consumers, this 'consumer auction service' should provide a profitable venue for the company to get rid of them rather quickly, efficiently and profitably so that they can sell more new machines.Just a thought.

Re: "dell does not buy used computers, refurbish and sell but rather refurbish returned computers under warranty. with new computer prices falling, why dig into an area which would cloud the image and compete with new computers. i am puzzled ..."

IMO Dell is competing with GTW here. I could see home users buying cheap used PC's (possibly more than one or two) as a networking tool. They have the one good new highend PC and then many cheap good quality used pc's all around the house and garage etc. Dell knows what his furture customer's want.

Paul,

To penetrate some of the larger business accounts, Dell may have to take existing PCs in trade. Many large corporations have a rigid copy exact philosophy for their vital corporate applications.

Any variations causes them support problems, increased down time, worse customer service, ...

To establish a business relationship, it's worthwhile for Dell to make it easy for the new customer to dispose of existing equipment.

Auctioning 2-3 year old equipment won't take from Dell's existing customer base.

And it will allow Dell to be fiercely competitive in winning even more market share.

JMHO,
Ian.

paul... i'm joined with you in puzzlement! or "do you remember new coke?"

"mikey" is a man who clearly stated that he believes in the possibility of growing the pc business by $90b in five years. why would the ceo of one of the worlds largest corporations(by that time), talk such foolishness of selling a refurbished product, assumed to the consumer market which would dilute sales of new units????? you can't sell used pc's without inventory of cores to be refurbished, you need qualified people to refurbish...why use what everyone claims is a diminishing qualified work force to refurbish pc's???? let them build new....i think this i a marketing mistake of "olympic" proportions. where is the future other then the pc????

envision this....jacques nassar ceo of ford, at the london motor show...gives a weekend interview to the times about the future of the automobile, every one waiting for the earl's court intro of a new luxury s-type jag model, volume production with high margin...as the curtain lifts, jacque standing in front of a refurbished pinto...

maybe "mikey" is giving "trade-in" allowances for corporate up grades, and he has a glut of machines in a warehouse somewhere???.....i hope not....

Hi Paul:
Did you see the article on Dell giving away net access time with new computers?
All this giving away doesnt sound good for business.
What a terrible last five weeks it has been on the market.

Can we still have realistic hope?
