Re: More DSL Silicon Companies - Silicon Spice & Centillium Tech "I'm still finding it really amazing how many chipmakers say they are in the DSL sector. A sector that barely has started real world deployments." Thread, For future reference, here's two more in the silicon game designing for DSL technology. I am finding it hard to believe how many are in this sector. For so many companies to be basing their futures on DSL, may mean something big may happen in the DSL space? MikeM(From Florida) _______________________Plugged In: Chip Startups Overlooked In Net Rush By Therese Poletti SAN FRANCISCO - ....Because Internet startups usually get more attention from venture capitalists and the press, chip startups have a harder time getting funding and finding engineers and top management, as VC firms become more selective in the semiconductor sector. ..As a result, many venture capitalists are focusing on areas such as communications, networking, wireless and optical technologies -- technologies focused on giving more devices communications capabilities and moving data faster over networks. ''If we are putting all this content on the Web, there has to be an infrastructure to move it around,'' Marren said. ''In communications is where it is hot.'' For example, one startup that is generating some buzz is Silicon Spice, a Mountain View, Calif.-based telecommunications chip company that recruited industry veteran Vinod Dham as its president and chief executive. Dham was previously at Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Intel Corp., where he oversaw the development of AMD's K6 and Intel's Pentium and 486 chips. Founded in March 1997, Silicon Spice isn't saying too much. Its Web site says it is developing technology that will ''dramatically alter'' the telecommunications industry. But industry sources said Silicon Spice is working on super high-end processors for DSL (digital subscriber line) , for faster Internet access for homes and small businesses.Another startup addressing DSL is Centillium Technology , which completed its third round of venture financing in May, receiving a hefty $38 million. Fremont, Calif.-based Centillium is developing chipsets for DSL and was founded in April 1997 by several executives from Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq:CRUS - news), including Chairman Kamran Elahian, who co-founded both NeoMagic Inc. and Cirrus..... ________________dailynews.yahoo.com
