"DJ Compaq Up 10%; Dorfman Mentions On JagNotes Web Site"

Dow Jones Newswires -- June 22, 1999

PALO ALTO, Calif. (Dow Jones)--Shares of Compaq Computer Corp.
(CPQ) rose more than 8% Tuesday after influential financial journalist Dan Dorfman mentioned the company in a column on JagNotes, an investment Web site.

In the column, Streetside, Dorfman said the market is rife with unconfirmed rumors Internet investment company CMGI Inc. (CMGI) is negotiating the purchase of Compaq assets that include its Internet search engine, AltaVista.

The talk is sending Compaq's shares higher, according to the report.

Compaq and CMGI weren't immediately available for comment.

Shares of Compaq were recently up 8.2%, or 1 13/16, at 23 15/16 on fairly heavy volume of 23.3 million, compared with average daily volume of 18.1 million.

Compaq is just above its 52-week low of 20, reached June 17. Its 52-week high, 51 1/4, was reached Jan. 27.

Analysts said personal computer maker Compaq is also up as investors view the stock as a good value at current low levels.

"A lot of bad news has already been factored into the stock price," said Jeffrey Maxick, an analyst at Madison Securities in Chicago. "You can expect a 10% to 15% return on the stock in the next 12 months."

James Meyer, director of research at Janney Montgomery Securities in
Philadelphia, said investors also expect Compaq will soon appoint a new chief executive, as alluded to in a conference call last week to announce expected second-quarter losses. As reported, Compaq said it expected to announce a loss of 15 cents a share in the second quarter.

The stock fell to its 52-week low after the announcement.

Maxick said a new chief executive should boost the stock.
