My 2 cents:

1. Revenue guidance was really depressing - Paisley warned that first half of FY00 sales could be down from first half FY99. Once the sell siders plug that into their models, FY00 growth expectations will be less than 5%.

2. Management was very vague about strategy - What does 3Com want to be and how will it get there? Institutional investors want them to signal divestiture of part or all of client access. Hey, HP spun off the instruments business!

3. Operations continue to kick serious ass. Gross margins up (adjusting for one time items), expenses down, tax rate to be reduced from 31% to 29%. This will partially offset the disappointing revenue guidance, but not completely.

4. Everyone likes stock buybacks.

5. Most of the business is healthy - this is not a Cabletron meltdown. Palm is a superstar.

6. Stock will definately go down, and sharply, tomorrow. We'll be selling. Probably will buy some back after the dust settles.

Raymund & Thread: Sure there has been some disappointment...a penny is not going to keep Benhamou nor Paisley in their positions...the shareholders will make sure of that! The technical side of the organization and especially the intellectual assets are worth considerable more than 30 bucks if an acquisition offer is made...no need to panic everyone. Weak hands are going to take some of their profits on Wednesday only to buy back at a higher price later. Shorts are coming onto thread to get a "feel" as to positioning themselves...this happens every time 3com comes out with earnings. Just a head game going on!
