Vinik is a sleaze who will resort to any means possible to drive up the stocks he is long. The basic idea is to start driving the stock up with carefully placed buys, so that the shorts get scared and have to cover in a hurry. This short-covering further drives the stock up. He also committed one of the most famous pump & dumps of all time back in '95, when he touted MU in Barron's while he was selling it.
