I believe he runs his own hedge fund, but not absolutely sure....

anyway, he has wide discretion in his investing, which is what got him in trouble at Fidelity.

Didn't he start his own fund company? Vinik and Sons, or something.

Vinik ran the Magellan fund. A few years ago he was talking up tech stocks and how much he liked them, and how he was still snapping up shares (including on Wall Street Week)- in reality he was selling off as fast as he could and moving into bonds.

Micron shareholders sued Fidelity for this and won a $10 million judgement, out of court. Fidelity pretty much admitted it. Vinik was canned from Magellan.

BTW, tech stocks kept doing very well, and Magellan performance sagged badly compared to SP500 for a while due to Vinik's shift to bonds.
