Not only are you not required to purchase a house when the real estate market goes berzerk, but if you already own a home like I do then the morgage doesn't go anywhere (actually, it has drifted lower relative to my income).

Of course, the poor saps who've had to rent because they couldn't afford the skyrocketing housing costs in Seattle have seen their rents go up year after year...

BGR,

I didn't say they did. I said "assume". I was presenting an example of how rent and home increases can diverge and negatively effect the non-owner who might want to become one.
