One last time..

1. Go buy 1,000 shares of THQ

2. Now go and short 1,000 shares of THQ

How many shares net do you have in your account ZERO correct

How many shares get reported short each month 1,000

Now do it on a bigger scale Buy 100,000 shares of THQ

Now go short 100,000 shares of THQ

How many shares do you have in your account net ZERO correct

How many shares get reported short each month 100,000

GET the picture yet?

Why do the big boys do this? So they can get away with the uptick rule. How is that you ask. Well assuming they are flat in their account and they want to go short without an uptick they sell 100,000 shares of stock that was long and not subject to the uptick rule. Whats left? the 100,000 shares short.

Why does THQ have such a large short position Well now you understand why the stock is so volatile
