I don't think most people are gloomy over the possible Alta Vista deal.

Unfortunately, due to the lackluster job of CPQ and Digital most people no longer know Alta Vista. If you are a power user and a WWWofile back in 94 or so, you can make that site sing but to the average nontechie on the web, he/she gets information overload and will not take the time to learn how to filter and refine searches.

CMGI will make Alta Vista much more user friendly and increase its value rapidly. The reason we can potentially get it at a "relatively" low price (in internet terms) is due to the fact that the old owners didn't do much to develop mass useability. Their loss is our gain.

Regards

Why is SI board so gloomy over this deal. I went to Yahoo and most of the responses are positive.

Well, parentage, whether Yahoo or SI, is entirely another matter. But there's no reason to be gloomy over this proposed acquisition. It lays to rest the IRS and SEC issues and clears the slate, as it were, for CMGI to do what it knows how to do.

I just don't have a problem with CMGI subsequently doing an IPO with Alta Vista, although I seem to recall that there's a longer holding period required by the tax code to support the CMGI business model that may make a burn and churn acquisition less than likely.

I'm no dinosaur, but FWIW, I use Alta-Vista exclusively as a search engine and have for years.

Alright, no flames please....

Best regards,
