It is amazing the range of responses on brokers. I absolutely detest Ameritrade, thought I had good service with DATEK, and think Dreyfus is the best broker I have ever dealt with. Most likely lots of folks out there would reverse those opinions.

DATEK is an interesting one to deal with. If you know how to use their servers, i.e., put about 4 up at one time, you rarely have a problem. They were the only discount broker I could find at the time that gave you trade by trade margin account updates, and I really liked that.

Unlike we traders, I don't think any of the brokers are perfect. So, I guess we just have to suffer along. Sure beats paying $200 a trade on commissions, and waiting two days to hear from a broker that tried to sell you his research department picks (i.e., the stocks his own firm was trying to dump).
