So Vinik is buying? Welcome to the world of Wall Street. This is what many hedge funds do -- they deliberately try to frighten holders of stock or short shares to part with their possessions. Just as a reminder, its what some institutional shorts successfully did to RMBS on the way down to the 60s. And they had the "help" of their friends in the press. Who -- by the way -- are still in the game.

Dave, Vinik does not have to tell us what he does (unless he owns 5% and even then he will file papers only on the 10th of the next month). I could make some guesses, but that is about it. If he had a long position and he lent the stock out to shorters, he could "call" the stock and cause a run. He could just spread a rumor that he's done this (through "plants" like the one m,entioned here last night). He could have initiated the stampede through $88 last week by concentrating buying and then support the break through $about $91 or so. He might even be selling here between 98 and 103 into the stampede he has created. The kind of position he hold, if holds any, needs a lot of volume to allow for distribution. Mind you the whole thing is no more than a speculation. The rise might have been anticipation of some "RMBS inside" at the NY show, and now that none of it came through, we may go back and retest the high 80' or so. If the SOX stays strong, we may sprint through the old time high, and then we might have a real short squeeze.

The key is the sec filing, imo. I think when he owns 5% he has to file the form. As the filing becomes public it creates a mini bull run on the stock and it snowballs upward.
