Hmm.. I don't think of it in terms of "neighbors". I was thinking in terms of the "they".. the slave holders, the rich elite who have serfs that aren't supposed to rise above. More like "we're all neighbors of stature", not a few who own and get educatin', but even the lowest of the low can aspire to something more. That was a great shift in the general way of the world. The "kiss off" wasn't to any individuals but to a system. Does that make sense? Maybe it was that bravado that the lowest can need to muster to move beyond. Not a negative thing at all. I'm blubbering now probably. <g>
