Thanks Mark. I realize that E-Trade's site has gone down several times, but this appears to be a problem shared to some extent by all the online brokers. Even Fidelity had the problem for the last half hour of yesterday. Schwab has had similar problems in the past month. Have to admit that the additional $500 commissions per year for Schwab make a difference, although is a secondary concern. Was also thinking that I may have a better chance at IPOs with E-trade. Do like fact that Schwab has an office 5 miles from me.

"it does take a while to get in touch with a human being"

well, Iguchi, if you're an active trader, there is virtually no holding in line, you get access to a human being in seconds via a special phone number for platinum customers, even on the busiest day.
what E*TRADE definitely needs to improve, is the customer service via EMAIL, sometimes it takes 2 or 3 days for them to answer a simple request via email.
again, they should learn from Amazon's superb customer service in this respect.
