I really enjoyed your post. Very informative and thought provoking. Thank you.

If these issues really boil down to culture, and comfort level among people who happened to have been trained one way or another, neither of which is necessarily right or wrong in all circumstances and under all applications, then what's the point of proclaiming without a more empirical analysis that VTS has a "bad" O/S? And it turns out that the point is to trash the stock without sweating the details. Which is a common tactic of shorts, and is ultimately pretty offensive. Your post is like the reverse mirror image of that - pure information and insight, to be considered on its own terms, not by the unsupported opinion of its author.

FWIW - I have this daydream where VTS handles 80,000 transactions a day, and only a few of them are equal to the 5,000 share minimum. And in that daydream, I usually find myself on the deck of a really nice sailing yacht off of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, my kids are smiling, my wife is smiling, the breeze is cutting through the hot Caribbean sun . . . . . I guess the thought of needing to address a hardware upgrade to achieve "scalability" at that point hasn't been a recurring part of that particular daydream, but after reading your post, it is gratifying to know that scalability can be achieved notwithstanding the protests of the UNIX tribe, and that I can resume daydreaming in peace.

Anyway, thanks again for your post.

Great post Jack. I take issue with MST not giving credit to other experienced people on this thread for having the insight to call attention to potential issues with VTS and scalability over time. This is a serious concern, however, one which can be addressed.

As far as portability of the code is concerned; if the system were written using any standard software engineering principles, then it is highly likely that porting the code to a Solaris/VM/Linux/OS/2-Mac OS (god forbid) environment is possible. I can't imagine that there is really that much code involved.

One final technical concern I have is their choice of encryption. I have never heard of ATED encryption. I just hope it is supported.
