To be fair - most of the believers I know are good because it's the right thing to do. The fear of damnation is actually not a major moral engine for these folks - rather the desire to participate in all the "good stuff". This majority of confessed believers does not hold with a literal application of the Bible, because they know it can be an imperfect and sometimes plain mean document. So they're selective and yet they still believe.
