During WWII the US government closed all gold mines to keep miners working at more "productive pursuits."

Hmmmm... didn't know that Bob. Interestin' though.

I guess the US gov't didn't feel that gold compared in strategic value to other metals like iron, copper, nickel, and tin.

During a war even... You'd think the gov't would have EVERYONE mining and recycling gold, ala Ole 49r.
