<<Very OT: Confessions Of A Slogger>>

Okay, I admit it. I confess to being a slogger... right in the middle of his prime sloggerhood.

There are a world of swooshers who slalom at breakneck speed
through their lives. They quest for gold medals because nothing else will do. They have interesting hair. Everything is a blur. They speak in code. They don't get "face time"... they niggardly parcel it out... as a favor to lessers.

You don't really KNOW a swoosher. You just feel them sort of brush past, like the wind from a passing car.

But, we sloggers take the scenic route. If there could be a thing called a "sloggernaut", it would be a glacier, I think. We tend to linger overlong in conversation. We actually listen to the Ethiopian cabdriver who is seventy years of age, but five years new to our country. He talks about the huge stones that go into the construction of Eastern Orthodox churches. We catch details... sometimes dwelling upon them--almost dwelling within them--without reference to the bigger picture.

You may not like us, but you know us. We're the old Hush Puppy shoes that used to seem very comfortable when you were in your early teens, before you realized just how un-cool they were.

If there were a slogger anthem, it would be a slow piece for sure. It might have a goodly share of minor notes, as well. To the casual ear, it could even sound a little sad. (But, to swooshers, everything slow sounds sad.) Not sad, though. Not really. A beat that breathes, that's all. Human.

Best Regards,

c m
