FRANKFURT, June 23 (Reuters) - European online bookseller BOL expects to generate 55 million marks ($29 million) in sales this year, with about a third coming from Germany, parent Bertelsmann AG <BTGGga.F> told a German newspaper.

Launched five months ago, BOL has already pulled in sales of 3.5 million marks in Germany, the world's second-largest book market after the United States, Bertelsmann management board member Klaus Eierhoff told the daily Die Welt.

France, Britain and Holland, where BOL had a later start, have racked up 2.5 million marks in sales, he said.

Die Welt said Bertelsmann was expecting full-year sales of 18 million marks in Germany and 27 million from the rest of Europe.

Bertelsmann, the world's largest publisher of English-language books, aims to make BOL the top online bookseller in Europe and to challenge Amazon.com <AMZN.O> for global leadership.

In the fourth quarter, BOL will add music to its offerings, although it does not plan to follow Amazon in selling toys, health products and other consumer goods over the Internet, BOL Managing Director Thomas Schneiders said.

The group plans to expand into Japan, Korea or China but has no plans to go to the U.S. or Australia, which are covered by Barnesandnoble.com <BNBN.O>, another Bertelsmann venture, international chief Heinz Wermelinger said.<<
