Re: AOL / Spaceway / Teledesic

"So, does this mean that AOL becomes a long term national telecommunications infrastructure play, as well as fulfilling their content role?"

Frank, I can't quite figure it out yet? But I like Steve Case's vision as long as he doesn't go overboard. I think the articles are doing just that. But I'm guessing Case's plans are a lot more, "down to Earth" (pun intended) and may even entertain re-purchasing an AOL position (after I sold mine at around 80 before it ran up to 160).

"And Teledesic? What are the odds that they will pull their act off on schedule? Any ideas regarding their fate, in general?"

Frank, That's an easy one. Zilch<G>. They are currently planning for service to begin in 2003. It sure sounds like the project is still go to me, and I think that is pretty impressive in itself! But obviously when you have three of the world's richest men involved, they can definitely pull something like this off. Absolutely amazing.

The download speeds of Teledesic are supposed to be 64 Mbps and uploads at 2 Mbps. So it's comparable(loosely speaking) to Hughes' Spaceway project. Teledesic will be the ultimate, "backbone," in the history of telecommunications. I like this idea better than what Spaceway appears to be planning. But it's so early, ANYTHING could change.
