Teal Group Forecasts 1,447 Satellites, 850-900 Launches Worldwide
Through 2009

NEW YORK, June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Teal Group presented its revised figures for the future of the worldwide satellite launch
market at the WorldSat '99 Space & Satellite Finance Conference in New York City, June 14-16. The 10- year forecast, covering 2000-2009, includes a total of
1,447 satellites to be launched aboard 850-900 launch vehicles. Teal estimates the value of the satellites at $126.8 billion and the value of the launch services at
$49.5 billion.

According to senior analyst Marco Caceres, who authors Teal's World Space Systems Briefing publication, 893 of the total satellites will be commercial satellites
worth about $56.1 billion, 299 will be military satellites worth about $36.7 billion, and 255 will be civil satellites worth about $34 billion. The value of the launch
services needed to orbit these satellites is estimated at $25 billion for commercial, $13 billion for military, and $11.5 billion for civil.

''The space market is clearly a growth market,'' noted Caceres. ''More commercial satellites will be built and launched than ever before in history. However, the
market for launch services will not be as robust as it will be for satellite manufacturing.''

The study noted that many of the new satellites will increasingly be launched in batches of two or more, thus limiting the demand for launch vehicles. It also concluded
that the only way to expand the market significantly and create more business for both satellite manufacturers and launch service providers will be to drastically
reduce launch prices.

''So long as it costs in the range of $2,000 to $10,000 per pound to orbit, hundreds and perhaps thousands of potential customers will not be able to afford to build
and launch their satellites,'' said Caceres. ''Prices must go under $1,000 per pound, even under $500 per pound in order to attract new customers that never even
thought about entering the space market.''
