Bellsouth wins Argentina PCS license

June 23, 1999

ATLANTA, June 22 /PRNewswire/ via NewsEdge Corporation -- Movicom, the Argentine cellular company 65 percent owned by BellSouth (NYSE: BLS), has submitted the apparent winning bid in an auction for new personal communications services (PCS) spectrum to serve all of Argentina outside metropolitan Buenos Aires.

Movicom will pay US$99 million for two 40MHz licenses to serve all Argentine provinces outside Buenos Aires, subject to final regulatory approval. Paired with a 20MHz license recently awarded to Movicom for Buenos Aires, the new licenses will allow Movicom to meet its goal of creating a mobile telephony network covering all of Argentina. Movicom already provides mobile telephony service to Buenos Aires using cellular telephone frequencies.

"Since the moment we introduced cellular telephony to Buenos Aires in 1989, we have looked forward to providing Movicom service to all of Argentina, " said Charles C. Miller, president of BellSouth International. "We are delighted that, with today's winning bids, we will be able to achieve this goal and extend our growth and success in this market."

"The new licenses consolidate and extend our leadership in the mobile telephony market. Together with the long-distance license awarded recently, they also give Movicom the platform it needs to become a full-service telecommunications provider in Argentina," said Mauricio Wior, president of Movicom and executive vice president of BellSouth International for Southern Cone Latin America.

In addition to its payment for the PCS licenses auctioned today, Movicom will pay US$162.75 million for the new 20MHz PCS license for Buenos Aires. It expects to initially spend a combined US$600 million to build out the new PCS licenses in Buenos Aires and the rest of Argentina.

Movicom has provided cellular service to Buenos Aires since 1989, where its strong market leadership and service reputation have made Movicom a household word for wireless telephone. Movicom saw customer growth of 41 percent in 1998 and currently serves 1 million customers.

BellSouth is a $23 billion communications services company. It provides telecommunications, wireless communications, cable and digital TV, advertising and publishing, and Internet and data services to more than 34 million customers in 19 countries worldwide.
