<--OT-->Frank,look at it this way if the Chairman can deflate the market temporarily that in turn should reduce the 'wealth effect' and the torrid consumer spending which normally is one of the causes of higher inflation. There is a thing called 'sustainable growth' you know.

So the choice is between unsustainable hypergrowth, high inflation and severe increase in interest rates or a bit of a 'temporary deflated market conditions' with slight increase in rates and sustainable growth. Talking down the market is one way to reduce the magnitude of the rate increase (if it is necessary)they tell me.

RE:Frank-guess I am in the minority but it is my "considered opinion" that the Fed itself is now ,and has been ,for several years a redundant-vestigial organ that the long bond has long replaced.wbm PS-It is furthur my opinion that Greenspan knows this but he relishes all the exposure he can get :Congressional appearances/TV" too continually instill the idea in the masses that he is invaluable.wbm
