Procedures For Complying with the New SKS Sporter Law

If you have determined that you are in possession of a firearm(s) meeting the prescribed criteria for the SKS Sporter Buy-back Program you must, pursuant to California Penal Code section 12285(b)(1), dispose of the rifle prior to January 1, 2000 by one of the following methods:

1) Render the firearm permanently inoperable.

2) Sell the weapon to a licensed firearms dealer who has a valid Department of Justice assault weapons permit.

3) Remove the firearm from California (it cannot be brought back into the State).

4) Relinquish the firearm to your local Police or Sheriff's Department, adhering to the guidelines, for disposal and reimbursement.

Please be aware that the SKS Sporter Buy-back provisions end on January 1, 2000. Beginning January 2, 2000, persons in California possessing an SKS semi-automatic rifle with a detachable magazine may be subject to prosecution, and the weapon subject to seizure, pursuant to California Penal Code section 12280.
