S.Koreans Protest Foreign Film Cos.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - About 500 actors, directors, students and film executives burned an effigy symbolizing Hollywood on Thursday to protest U.S. pressure on South Korea to allow more foreign movies.

In the latest of a series of protests by film industry members, they also burned enlarged Marlboro cartons and pictures of Coca-Cola and other American goods.

''Guard our cultural sovereignty! Protect our movie industry!'' they chanted, pumping clenched fists and waving banners and signs while marching to the main government complex for the two-hour rally.

For years, South Korea's government has protected the domestic movie industry by requiring that all movie theaters screen domestic films at least 146 days each year.

The U.S. government says the system is an unfair trade practice that discriminates against Hollywood films. It is demanding the restrictions be abolished or quickly phased out.
