Carole, not only can you not skip the teens; they are your children as long as you live. You will agonize with adults who happen to be your children and stay involved until you die.

One benefit: I and my mother, who had a troubled relationship through the "formative" years (we were at war in the sixties and early seventies), forged such a strong relationship in my twenties and her sixties that when she died a few years ago, I wept not only for the loss of my mother but also my closest friend.
