Web Washer:

Does this make anyone nervous?

Web washer is a very simple program. I could write one. All you have to do is search the downloading pages for certain HTML tags that indicate advertisements and then buffer the page without the ads and display the buffered page.

This will speed up page downloads a lot. The bottleneck in a download is the graphics. Most of the graphics are in the ads... you don't need to download them if you don't display them

So, if every one starts using a simple filter like this... why should a company advertise on the web. This will hurt internet content providers in a loss of ad revenue. GNET is aiming towards being in a better position with respect to $$ coming in from non-advertising revenue, but it still might be an issue.

Maybe I am making a mountain out of a molehill - but if the next version of Netscape navigator comes out with a utility to not display adds, you can bet that add revenue will be a smaller percentage of GNET's, YHOO's, AOL's and all those others' total revenue.
