Internetworking/IP Tools— Policy Server

QOS, Over Easy

Ukiah Software Inc. says setting intranet quality of
service shouldn't mean sacrificing quality of life. Its
Netroad Active Policy System (APS) doesn't just let
net managers define policies based on information
already stored in directories. It's also the first policy
server with application-layer monitoring functions for
automatically adjusting policies in response to
changing network conditions. Policy servers like the
Provider from Orchestream Ltd. (London) lack such
monitoring and reporting functions.

The system comprises four pieces of software.
Netroad Virtual Directory Server software stores
policies, communicates with directory services using
directory protocols like LDAP (lightweight directory
access protocol), and collects monitoring information.
Netroad QOS Policy Server sends policies to
devices on the network. Trafficware agents shape
traffic and monitor the network. And a separate
graphical interface works with Windows NT or a
Web browser.

The starting price is about $50,000. (The Virtual
Director Server starts at $25,000 and the QOS
policy server costs $20,000 per 10 devices
controlled. Trafficware agents range in price from
$500 to $10,000.) But net managers should keep
some things in mind. Right now, Netroad APS works
only with products from Ukiah (Campbell, Calif.) and
Cisco Systems Inc. (San Jose, Calif.). And there are
no users who can verify the vendor's performance
claims.

Welcome Back Paul....

>>Too many people think that a competent, intelligent mensch like Eric Schmidt cannot weed out the dead heads at Novell. Somehow the bench warmers will fool him. These people are wrong.

Novell's senior management is very focused on the success of Novell's winning the race to have its directory technology become the leading technology in the area of ecommerce. Do you think that with this priority they are not going to support the innovators within Novell? Do you think they are just going to watch the whole effort stagnate or drown because the company bureaucracy couldn't move fast enough to catch up with Novell's most innovative ecommerce initiatives?

NOT A CHANCE!!!>>

I am 1000% behind Schmidt.

They still need to throw out some of the Old deadwood. I know this takes time: internet time.....

Nice to have you back Paul. Hope you enjoyed your sabbatical.

GO!!
