Yougang,

It looks like IBM may be the cause of the delay..

As for:

"Megahertz doesn't really matter all that much anymore," said Carl Everett, a senior vice president at Dell Computer in charge of
the personal systems group. He said that the faster the speeds get, the less discernable the improvement, because the percentage
improvement diminishes as the number gets bigger.

Sounds like Dell griping that they won't be getting any K7's for a while and starting the new INtel marketting strategy "Who cares about performance.. just buy for the name".

Steve

Re: Test drivers of beta models say the chip (AMD 600-MHz) "smokes."

Probably not exactly the quote the PR group was looking for. :-)

<<Behind closed doors, IBM is demonstrating the computer at PC Expo here, according to sources. IBM would not comment.>>

Most important piece of information so far: Both chip and infrastructure are working properly!!!

<<Athlon-based PCs are expected to start hitting store shelves when the chip goes into volume production toward August, said sources,
and run at 500 MHz, 550 MHz, and 600 MHz, with faster speeds following. A press conference today at 2:30 p.m. PT may provide details on the K7/Athlon release.>>

Seems to conform with the original K7 launch schedule, unless the reporter was misled.

Forget the Dell rumor. It is a concerted effort from both Dell and Intel to discredit the mhz lead AMD will have over Intel shortly

Yougang - RE: "IBM will bring out the high-end Aptiva S series computer with AMD's upcoming K7 processor"

This is GREAT news for the Athlon's positioning. The S-series has always had the best products of whatever IBM has to offer and has obivously been Intel only.

With help from IBM and the other OEMs, AMD shouldn't have too much trouble positioning the Athlon as the chip that "smokes" the PIII.

Also, the stock went up in the last 45 minutes, so maybe the good will out-weigh the bad in half an hour.

How can this guy ignore the old axiom, MHZ SELLs (TM-McMannnis).
Carl Everett from Dell is a desperate Moron.
