I am by no means an expert....in fact i will categorically state "I don't have a duck...of what I am about to speak"!!

wpckr. My limited understanding of the SOFC is that as the heat levels decrease, the 'efficiency" of the SOFC also decreases. So, I agree this is "waste' but it is also what is needed to generate the efficient burning of the fuel.
In the end it is 'chicken and egg" SOFC's require heat to be in the 800c level to be most efficient. GLE has lowered that to 600c +/- a duck.

So using my skills as an engine builder (years ago...about as long ago as your mechanical engineering degree) I can tell you that if I had an SOFC I would compartmentalize the cells in a tubular like enclosure. The structure would have cooling fluids cycling thru it, strictly for cooling the outside of the enclosure with no intent but to "regulate the inside tempeature to 600c.

Then I would cycle the super heated fluids thru a radiator/heat exchanger cooling them down to the point where...when sitting in front of the car heater...two of your choices are NOT "fry" or "blow torch"!!!<gggg>
