My only hope is that the real estate
utilized by the "Sponsored by..." is the ONLY space so dedicated.

That's the problem. Once the camel's nose is in the tent, the camel will follow. No matter how good the intentions, money speaks, and G2N is in ultimate charge here, not our beloved SI founders.

Whether we like it or not, GNET and Datek are in bed together, as it were, via the Paul Allen connection. Businesses utilize partners to spread the message

Thanks Ira for posting that. Having been in an awkward situation myself when forced to deal with venture capitalists - not exactly the same situation here but similar - I can empathize with the people at Go2net. The only reason Allen gave them the money was to integrate into his ventures. Their choice was to walk away from any investment or take it and do the best they can with pleasing the user community. Maybe they shouldn't have made promises a few months ago but they are all pretty young over there.

The worst thing is when the VC people want you to fire some member of your team when you brought them on board and replace them with one of their people. Hopefully Vulcan kept the gnet management structure largely intact... I wonder....
