There are year-round termites in Louisiana, too, but for some reason they didn't use to be so bad, but now the Formosan ones have hitched a ride to the States, and it is a terrible problem in Baton Rouge, for one, and New Orleans, too. My dad has suggested that if I ever build a house I use steel framing. The one thing I know about that is it will expand in a fire and can actually cause more property damage - or at least that's what Chris says.
