Thread,

A few weeks back, I knew that AMD was going to have a tough time meeting 5Mu numbers but when the preannouncement did not come before quiet period I got misled into thinking that they would be much closer 5 MU (this was not just gut feel but based on all the data points I had including good laptop sales, steady prices, analysts, sources and other research). It turns out that Paul had the right info and I unequivocally apologize to Paul and the thread for accusing him or raising fud in this regard (Paul, of course did raise FUD on other issues but that is diferent story). What I can't believe is that AMD managment did not have the guts to come out and say they are seriously short two weeks back and not try to hide behind the K7 news.

The events that transpired today reconfirm to me the distinctly second rate thinking in expectation management and product launches.

The news on K7 front and the fab front is good (180nm production has commenced). Since these were two of the biggest risks AMD faced, AMD is probably going to do pretty well going forward but in a quarter where they had a chance to leave behind the baggage of mis-trust, they furthur ruined their reputation.

Had they been upfront and called the quarter 2 weeks back, they probably would have taken a small beating (can't go too low when you are this close to book price) but the K7 bull-run would have started by now. But, now the stockholders will be continue to be shortchanged because analysts will continue to wonder if there is yet another problem that the management has not been telling them about and will not give the stock the multiple the strong product offering entices.

Though, I am little more comfortable with K7 today than yesterday, I am a little less comfortable with Jerry & Co.

So, I will continue to remain "modrately" long instead of "seriously" long.

Chuck
