May Highlights: * We were relieved to see that the decline in web users last month was not a trend in May. Web users climbed from 61.1 million in April to 61.9 million in May. * The ranking of the top five networks remained unchanged in May. AOL Sites (AOL; D-1-1-9), maintained the No. 1 position with 65% reach (down 1 point). Microsoft Sites remained No. 2 (52%, down 1). Yahoo! Sites retained the No. 3 spot (51%, flat) while Lycos remained in the No. 4 position with 48% reach, up 1 point. No. 5 Go Network dropped 1 point to 34%, while No. 6 GeoCities (32%, flat) and No. 7 the Excite Network (28%, down 1 point) maintained their positions. * AOL Sites maintained the No. 1 position in reach, but time and pageviews matter too - and relative to Microsoft and Yahoo! in these metrics, AOL's web properties are still weak (we should emphasize that the web ratings include only AOL's web-based properties; the AOL service and Compuserve are dominant in reach, time, and pageviews in the online service market). The average AOL user spent 25 minutes on the sites in the month (up 1) and generated 28 pageviews (up 1) — about half as many pageviews as Yahoo! (65, up 1) and half as many minutes as the average Microsoft and Yahoo! user. * Yahoo! (YHOO; D-2-1-9; $158 7/8) again remained ahead of Lycos (LCOS; D-2-1-9; $96 5/8) in overall reach. In addition, Yahoo!'s minutes and pageviews--important when it comes to monetizing traffic--are still much higher than Lycos' and among the highest in the industry: Yahoo! users spent an average of 65 minutes (flat) on the sites in the month and looked at 65 pages per month (up 1), more than 4X as many minutes and pageviews as Lycos users. * Microsoft's overall reach fell a point to 52%. Microsoft's minutes and pageviews continued to be among the highest in the industry: 64 (down 2) and 44 (up 1). * The reach of the Go Network, the new Infoseek-Disney property, fell 1 point to 34%, but pageviews and minutes remained relatively unchanged. * Amazon.com's (AMZN; D-2-1-9; $123 1/2) reach increased again (16%, up, *) suggesting that it is continuing its transformation into a “shopping portal,” which we believe could ultimately generate significant advertising and e-commerce revenue, in addition to retail sales. The reach of Amazon consolidated Sites also increased slightly (17.5%, up *) and moved into the No. 9 position of the top 10 ten consolidated networks. To put this in context, Amazon's reach is now higher than AltaVista Sites.
