Actually, I imagine that DLJ doesn't really care. The analyst's reputation isn't taking a hit for recommending AMD because A) he didn't have that much of a reputation in the first place and B) everyone on the Street knows that DLJ is AMD's banker and thus ignores that analyst's opinion on AMD.

Secondly, I argue that it is in DLJ's interest to have AMD struggle. Problems at AMD mean that cash flow is tight and the credit rating is low. That means A) more debt offerings (which means more fees for DLJ) and B) a larger margin for every debt offering (lower credit ratings carry higher fees).

Seems to me that the only losers here are the long term holders of AMD equity and debt.
