I continue to have some difficulty with the technical definition of SAN and NAS but I have been able to differentiate between them in a way I can understand - cost!

A SAN can run $50 to $75K (or more) while the NAS can be as low as $1K.

No I don't think Seagate will preannounce. I expect them to be very close to the guidance they offered in the last earnings report.

Regards,
LT

Re: His terminology throws me a bit. Are "storage area networks" several storage facilities networked together to act as one? And, are "network attached storage systems" one storage facility with networked terminals?

I believe that Network Attached Storage is where you might take a disk file(s), add an Ethernet card and TCP/IP address with a little glue logic and anyone on the network can access the data (provided they have the right passwords, etc.).

Storage Area Network, by contrast, is a specialized second totally independent network, optimized for storage usage, which ties together all your storage and various computers. Your computers are tied together on the front end by your normal LAN and at the back end to a SAN with data on it. Better performance than NAS, more secure, etc. Hence, more expensive too.
