Let's pull a few quotes from that piece about the Nec-Hitachi agreement out for review:
1. "No DRAM makers can survive stiffer competition as long as they do the business as a side job."
2. "With their old conventional business style, they cannot compete with Micron, Samsung Electronics or the Taiwan DRAM chip makers,"
3. "In terms of production costs, Japanese makers will not be able to compete with foreign makers such as Samsung and Micron unless they compete with high added-value products" such as 256 megabit DRAMs"

So, we know that the Japanese have higher costs, and while they originally thought that they could make money at 128Mb, they have now given up that hope, and hope that maybe 256Mb will be better. Even though these companies are larger and more diverse that MU, that is not necessarily an advantage. Low cost is the key.
