Quite true. And then somebody comes along and says that to suit "our" (meaning "your") purposes, "we" (i.e., "you") have deliberately twisted the intent of the founders, and have invented a doctrine -- the "separation of church and state" -- that they never advocated.

It's a vicious circle. Original intent is important. All roads lead back to the Dead White Guys.

On the other hand, I wonder what would happen if we reopened the question of slavery. Washington, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe all owned slaves to the end of their lives. Washington at least made provision for emancipating his; the others never did. Did we twist their intent here? Hmmmm...
