Pat, I don't necessarily agree with your comment about nVidia keeping their chip prices high. All of it's customers are now competing with vertically integrated competitors who can, in theory, roll out (broadly) equivalent products for less cost. TNT based boards are going to be/are the most expensive boards on the market due to the inefficient model and nVidia's naturally high prices. I see reduced profits for the TNT's customers and they will pressure nVidia to lower their prices or at the least, not to increase them. Business with TNT will become unviable for the smaller players. JMO.

Again, S3 has not bought Diamond to rule the graphics empire. They just want to play in the modem, soundcard etc worlds as well. They want to be able to survive when no-one wants to buy their graphics chip anymore - which happened a while ago <g>.
