Looking at AMD's failure from another direction, does the choice of cache architecture have anything to do with it?

With mainstream low-end processors moving towards $50, the extra cost of the archaic cache memory on K6-2 motherboards may have impacted PC OEM's design decisions as well as the motherboard channel out of Asia (excerbated by cheap Celeron motherboards using low-cost chipsets).

The 256Kb cache on the K6-3 appears to be too fat to be able to position the chip in the low end. If AMD had designed a K6 with a lean 128Kb cache, wouldn't they have fared much better?

Now, the K7 appears to have a 128Kb L1 cache, but apparently, AMD does not have the manufacturing flexibility and motherboard design infrastructure to ramp it for low-end systems in a reasonable time-frame.

I am surprised that the drop here, so far, is less than 10%. I was hoping to pick up some very cheap shares.
