Henry, I think you have the core issues exactly right. I particularly resonate with the paragraph

Many of us joined SI because it was a community. And by joining I do not mean paying dues, I mean joining by making a commitment of time, energy and emotion to contribute to the intellectual content of the site. SI management sold itself as sharing this feeling. The Datek ad violates that spirit. To me this is no different than having a telemarketer calling me every time I'm having a conversation with a friend.

Your statement The majority of SI posters apparently don't care. With all due respect to my fellow protestors, none of the really well known SI 'darlings' have protested. is challenging to all of us to examine our consciences. While I cannot speak for the majority or the "darlings", I can offer my perspective.

SI, as a community, is something that I have struggled with. At times I feel like I am part of that community that is doing excellent analytical work, research, and debate. That people are treated with respect and given a chance. That people are learning from each other and growing.

At other times, I encounter spam, flaming, monumental egos, pumping and dumping, and disrespect. I have been reported to administration and threatened with a lawsuit because I disagreed with a member on si. I have had a member call me at home repeatedly after i asked the member not to call me, and the calls took place after 1 am. I have been smeared with rank perjoratives to others by very prominent members of si whose work i respect and promote at every opportunity.

I am not trying to whine about my experience as I have treasured it. However what I am trying to get across is that as valuable as SI has been to me, I have had to suffer certain indignities along the way. I am sure that this is in no way unique to posters. One has to weed through a certain amount of crap to get to the good parts.

The relevance of this to the Datek ad, for me, is that I place it in the category of indignities that come with the territory. Perhaps wrongly I see myself as powerless to do anything about it. As I say, I believe you have the high ground in the debate. Your position, is in my opinion, correct. And I for one, thank you for your leadership in this issue. In the same way, I believe, many of us watch in awe of the work that Janice Shell and FBNA do. We wish we had the knowledge, ability, character, and time to fight the good fight.

So if I would modify your view any, it would be that perhaps, your position is more generally supported than you believe, but many of us just don't know what we can do about it.

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they're here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Suddenly, SI is not half the place it used to be,
There's a shadow hanging over we.
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.

Why they had to go, I don't know they wouldn't stay.
SI did something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

Yesterday, posting was such an easy game to play.
Now I need a place to hide away.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Mm mm mm mm mm.

Henry, a well reasoned and articulate post, you have done a great job of illustrating the slippery slope that SI has placed itself and
it's members on ........I feel I'm slipping even as I type

John

Hey, just like the good old days !
or
Why I oughtta...

Posters signing up at Go2Net for the specific reason of attacking on the Welcome Thread is an attack, clearly. That is the attack I was referring to.
When posters like Cheeky and Josef and yourself speak about an issue as clearly as you have about this one, it is not a "few" posters, it is many. You don't consider this when you count your "few" posters, I do. For each post saying that "Henry, that is exactly how I feel" there are hundreds who silently concur, SI knows this.
You and your fellow protesters are not right, you just think you are right. What apologies have you seen from SI or for SI. We were never promised no ads, and if I see a banner pop up I better be able to turn it off.
Perhaps you better reassess what bombardment is. I fail to see your point. A part of the page is bombarding you because it is there ? It isn't a Banner, any Link Exchange member would laugh you out of the room for suggesting it was. If you look at this thread, #Subject-8301 you can see a link for Carlson On-line, you see it every time you read the thread. Where is your troubled reaction to that bombardment.
One of the things that bothers me is "Quisling". Anyone who disagrees with you on this is a Quisling ? I honestly think, "What do I want for nothing, my money back." and I feel entirely justified in thinking that. So now, they add a link to a sister company and change the color of a portion of the main screen. I am supposed to flip ? If I don't flip, I am a Quisling? You got me there Henry.
Most of my SI is incoming. I read a lot. The contribution that I receive from the community is overwhelming. I won't say you are right or wrong on the community issue Henry, I will say that I could choose to go either way with an issue like this, any poster could, the operative word is choose. It is not fair to suggest that people not siding with "GREEN SPAM SUX" are Quislings.
Like I said, I read SI a lot, it is small, it does blend, it is built in, if it wasn't I would ask "What is EFFING going on ?", it may not matter to you, it does to me.

I think i'm gonna put my visor down, maybe tighten my greaves <g>

Wow! You have a very valid point, sir. To be quite honest, I had not looked at it from those shoes you wear. Primarily because they are extremely tight on me.

But you make a very valid point.

Now, I am not sure that "quisling" would be the most appropriate noun to describe me, because although I know what it means, most of the people born after us do not.

Perhaps "yellow-bellied coward" would be better.

I hope I can at least recover some small modicum of your respect by telling you that I have decided not to participate in the beta test.
